Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School (DSNCS) was founded with the belief that excellent schools are a crucial part of strong, vibrant urban communities. DSNCS is a Horace Mann “in‐district” charter school, part of Boston Public Schools. Founded by The Boston Plan for Excellence (BPE) and the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative, DSNCS works with local partners to ensure all children in the Dudley neighborhood have access to a seamless, high-quality education.

A lifelong learner, Heckstall hails from Middletown, CT, and attended Trinity College in Hartford, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. During his time at Trinity, he found that his work tutoring and helping to lead an after school program sparked a passion for education, specifically working with students in underserved communities. He decided that he would combine that love of working with youth and an interest in studying how people learn to center his career decisions moving forward.

Heckstall began working for Citizen Schools. He worked with middle school students in Dorchester to provide mentorship and real-world learning experiences while completing his Master of Education from Lesley University. Afterwards, he became a Teach For America corps member and worked as a science and special education teacher at what is now the Dearborn STEM Academy. Heckstall remained working in schools as a teacher, a Dean of Students, and most recently as a Co-Principal of the 9th Grade Academy at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, MA.

Mr. Heckstall joined Teach For America’s staff in the summer of 2018, leading the direct support and development of the current corps members in the region. In this role, he also supervised the region’s school-based coaches and supported program management as the Managing Director of Teacher Leadership Development. He now comes back to a school-based role and is excited to join the Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School as Principal.
