Principal, Yu Ming Charter School
Yu Ming is a Mandarin-immersion school that provides students in grades K-8 with a diverse, joyful, and caring community. Here, they are inspired and engaged by learning experiences that are purposeful, rigorous, and personalized.
In this role, Greg will oversee the day-to-day instruction for the K-8 school. As the Principal, he will lead the implementation of Yu Ming’s dual-immersion instructional program. He will find, retain and develop high-quality faculty and staff. Additionally, he will support all members of this diverse community with cultural competence and an emphasis on respect and inclusion.
Previously, Greg was at Alpha Public Schools, a K-12 charter network in San Jose. He started as an Assistant Principal seven years ago, and most recently served as the Senior Director of Culture. In this role, he supported school leaders in implementing positive school culture systems and multi-tiered systems of support across the network. Before Alpha, Greg worked as a school leadership resident at High Tech Middle School in San Diego, California. Also, he served as the Director of Educational Game Design at an ed-tech startup focused on primary school education in Shanghai, China. Finally, he also worked as a middle school math teacher in Portland, Oregon. He started out his professional career as a psychology research coordinator at a Veterans Hospital before transitioning to education.
An East Bay native and biracial Chinese-American, Greg grew up visiting his grandmother in Oakland Chinatown on the weekends. His years working in China helped develop his proficiency in Mandarin. Greg’s experiences navigating different cultural contexts and identities since childhood have prepared him well for his new role at Yu Ming, growing the school, coaching educators, and fostering student leaders in this increasingly global world. In accepting his appointment, Greg said:
“I’m incredibly thankful and excited for this opportunity to be a part of a school that brings together everything I value and care most about in education – and to get the chance to embody and model those things for students, families, and staff as its Principal.” – Greg Callaham.
